Is Albania Safe for Cyclists? An Honest Answer

It's the question everyone asks before booking, and most cycling websites dodge it. We live and ride here, so here's the straight version.

## The roads

Better than the reputation suggests. Main routes — the coastal highway, the SH8 over Llogara, the inland roads around Gjirokastër and Përmet — are paved and in good condition. Albania has put serious money into its road network in the last decade. You'll still find the odd rough patch on back roads, but nothing a road bike can't handle if you're paying attention.

## The traffic

This is Albania's secret weapon. Outside Tirana and Durrës, traffic is light — and in the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn), some of the best cycling roads in Europe are practically empty. Drivers are used to sharing roads with cyclists, shepherds, and the occasional donkey. Ride predictably, use a rear light, and you'll be fine.

## Dogs

Let's be honest: free-roaming dogs in rural villages are the one real nuisance. Most bark and don't bite, but a charging dog at 40 km/h downhill gets your attention. Our advice: don't try to out-sprint them, slow down, face them, and keep riding steadily past. A firm voice works wonders. In our guided tours, the support van has your back.

## The people

Albanian hospitality toward cyclists is genuinely exceptional. Expect waves, shouts of encouragement on climbs, and café owners who refuse to let you pay for your espresso. We've never felt unwelcome on a bike here — not once.

## What to carry

A charged phone, cash in lek (small villages are cash-only), two bottles, basic spares, and travel insurance that covers cycling. Download your routes offline — signal drops in the mountains.

## The verdict

Yes — Albania is safe for cyclists, with the normal precautions you'd take anywhere rural. The combination of quiet roads, good surfaces, and warm locals makes it one of the most rewarding places we've ever ridden.
